A digital journalism project focused on spreading awareness of the spread of disinformation and its impact on individuals and communities.
ABOUT INFODEMIC
The NewsHouse is a multimedia news site for Syracuse University students to publish their work. Every year, the NewsHouse gathers a group of students to report about a chosen topic with the end product being a website. This year, the chosen topic was disinformation, its prevalence, and its impact.
Infodemic describes an excess of information, often unreliable, that spreads quickly and makes it hard for people to identify the truth. I co-directed with Natalia Deng Yuan to brand and design the project. My responsibilities spanned from website design to animating illustrations to planning meetings.
BRANDING EXPLORATION
When making the idea of Infodemic come to life in the logo and color scheme, I pulled inspiration from many places including old newspapers, physical collages, and digital news sites. For colors, we chose to stick with black and white with strong red accents to represent the danger of misinformation and the division it can cause in society.
INTERACTION
One challenge we faced when designing the website was: how could we incorporate interactions in a way that elevates the user experience? The main function of the website is to display student’s reporting, but we duly wanted to make the experience of viewing the work exciting. To accomplish both of these objectives, I decided to add subtle animations on the homepage to draw in users.
